Pet of the Year Competition

Chilli and Nestle were entered into the “2014 Pet of the Year Competition”
coordinated by the local newspaper.
Last year, Lydia was too late in entering the 2 Happy Hens in the photo competition,
however, they did not miss out this year!
Chilli and Nestle were the only two pet birds entered into
the annual “2014 Pet of the Year Competition” which is
typically dominated by dog and cat entries.
We firmly believe that chickens make great pets!
Nestle would win the “sookiest chook” award in a pet competition any day!
Chilli would win the “best impersonation of a duck” prize with
her love of water and honking noises when she’s cranky!

Happy Halloween

Sometimes a bad photo of your pet can be appropriate for Halloween!
Chilli roars!
(It's actually a bad photo of Chilli yawning!)

Dirty Feet, Dirty Beak

Chilli has dirty feet after digging in the wet ground.
Chilli loves playing in the water.
Chilli loves to hide behind the shed door when it's open.
Nestle stands on a pile of bricks with dirty feet.
Muddy footprints.
Chilli has a dirty wattle (red thing under her beak).
How did your wattle get dirty Miss Chilli?
Nestle has a dirty beak.

Chick Sit

The 2 Happy Hens have gone clucky in spring!
Nestle was laying an egg and Chilli decided to jump
in the nesting box and push her way underneath Nestle.
Chilli also pushed Nestle's fresh egg out of the box and onto the ground!
Chilli was very comfortable in her bed with Nestle sitting on her.
It was like Chilli was re-living her younger chick days being sat on!
Chilli had a nice sleep under Nestle for about half an hour.
Nestle was happy being boss, sitting on Chilli.
Now that's what you call 2 Happy Hens!
Rear view of Nestle sitting on Chilli.
You can see the egg on the ground underneath the nesting box.

Spring Rose

Spring has sprung in Western Australia!
The single petal white climbing rose bush ('Macartney's Rose') flowers
every September and is about three metres high and three metres wide.
 The bees love the roses.
 A simple but stunning flower.
Chilli strikes a pose under the rose!
Nestle stands in the dappled afternoon sunlight.
Nestle camoflagues well with the leaf litter
under the climbing rose bush.
The 2 Happy Hens scratch in the garden,
doing what they do best!
Chilli takes a rest.

We Love Meal Worms

The 2 Happy Hens absolutely love eating fresh meal worms;
it's their all time favourite food.
We buy home-grown meal worms locally from our friend Leonie.

Gerard feeds a handful of meal worms to Nestle and Chilli.
The cream flakes is bran which the meal worms feed off
whilst in the storage container in the fridge.
Chilli pushes Nestle out of the way.
Peck, peck, peck. Yum, yum, yum.
Chilli has a patch of meal worms all to herself, lucky Chilli!
The 2 Happy Hens want more meal worms!
 .
Please sir, I want some more!
The 2 Happy Hens look up to Gerard in anticipation.
Nestle gets impatient and jumps up to the
meal worm container in Gerard's hands.
The 2 Happy Hens eat out of Gerard's hand.
They love being hand fed.

We love meal worms!

Fed and Watered

The 2 Happy Hens love to eat a seed mix containing
wheat, black sunflower seeds and cracked corn.
Blue ice-cream containers are recycled
and are used to store chicken feed.
Chilli eats lettuce out of Lydia's hand.
The 2 Happy Hens are very spoilt and love to be hand-fed.
Lettuce is one of their favourite foods, even if they aren't hungry!
Nestle jumps on the pink bin used to store chicken feed in the shed.
Pink for girls of course!
The orange bag is 'LIVAMOL' which is a palatable blend of proteins,
energy and polyunsaturated oil formulated to improve coat condition
and the general appearance of all livestock, including poultry.
The 2 Happy Hens are fed a small bowl of 'LIVAMOL' mixed
with laying pallets and water for breakfast every morning.
Nestle drinks rain water from a watering can positioned under a down pipe.
Nestle camoflagues well with the brown leaf litter on the ground!
Nestle and Chilli take a drink from their water container located in the back yard.
Chilli likes to put her foot in the water bowl when she has a drink.
Chilli is attracted to water, especially rain, and enjoys getting wet
(sometimes we think she is a duck!)
2 hydrated hens.
