My First Moult

Miss Giblet has begun to moult now that she is 25 months old.
It is normal for chickens to have a big moult once they turn 2.
I have temporarily nicknamed Giblet "Miss Moulty".

Miss Moulty looks like an old scruffy (but happy!) hen.
You can see lots of new feather spikes around her head.

Miss Moulty has a loose white feather on her back.
There are feathers everywhere in the garden during Giblet's moulting stage.
Curry is in the background and had a minor moult 4-5 months ago.

Miss Moulty has a bald patch on her breast and is in the crappy corner
of the yard where there are weeds and plastic air conditioning hoses.

Miss Moulty loves to drink out the the little watering can.

Miss Moulty is a typical happy hen and likes to
sunbake lifting her wing to warm her body.
You can see some navy blue spikes on her belly where new feathers are growing.

Miss Moulty shows off some brand new wing feathers whilst sunbaking.

Easter Nesting Noises

TURN SOUND UP!
This Easter movie is of Giblet sitting on
Curry's egg in a nest they made in the long grass.
Miss Giblet is so happy you can hear her "purring".
Curry makes lots of little sooky noises in the background
and makes a brief appearance towards the end of the movie.

Easter Egg Song

Giblet was nesting in the grass on Easter Saturday and was
surprised when Curry cracked an egg song.

Easter Update

Curry stands up after laying an egg on Easter Sunday.

Curry is out of the nesting box and is about to jump over the perch.

Curry walking out of the coop ready for some Easter adventures in the garden.

Jungle Curry!
The 2 Happy Hens made a nest in the long grass on Easter Saturday to lay two eggs.
The girls have since had a "coop re-induction" to
entice them back into their safe nesting boxes!
I have some movies of the hens nesting in the garden
which I am trying to load onto my blog.

Giblet and the geraniums.
There are two mushrooms growing under the
flowering geraniums which is a rare sight.

Aussies keep more chooks and pets at home

Reported by AAP

Friday, March 30, 2012
Australian families are keeping more chooks and pets in their backyards as they bring a bit of old-style living back to the major cities, retail giant Bunnings says.
Top business news
"People are keeping chickens and poultry again and it's a big part of our business, it really is becoming a big part," Bunnings chief operating officer PJ Davis told reporters during a tour of the Bunnings Greenacre store in Sydney on Friday.
"Pet accommodation, I suppose is what we like to call it, is actually a big thing."
Bunnings, which is owned by Wesfarmers, has expanded its range of pet shelters, plants and playground equipment in recent times.
But it's not only young families who are leading the push towards growing their own vegetables and keeping rabbits, chickens and geese as well as traditional pets.
"Younger people in Australia have always liked pets but as the population ages I think pets are becoming more and more a part of everyday life for people and leading on from that has been the veggie garden," Mr Davis said.
