Goodbye Lexi

Our lovely white leghorn hen Lexi was sadly put to sleep
on 19th December 2025. The photo above was taken on the
first day Lexi came to live with us over 4 years ago.
Lexi was approximately 2 years old when we adopted her.
Lexi was once described as a 'real chicken' by our friend Laurie.
She was a placid, sweet natured hen who didn't like fuss and bother.
Lexi was the easiest hen we're ever owned due to her easy going personality.
The only naughty thing she did was peck and eat polystyrene boxes!

Lexi had an extra large, floppy comb.
This is a funny photo of Lexi who's comb flopped upwards as she lifted her head.
Lexi's first molting of feathers was a big one when she was aged about 3.
Lucky her new feathers grew back very quickly in about 6-8 weeks.
Lexi looked like she had a fluffy bum crack when her new feathers grew back.
Lexi loved sleeping as she was often the first hen in the coop at night time.
Here she is squeezed into a nesting box with Frenchy (top left)
and Speckles (bottom) on a cold winter's night in June 2025.
Knowing that Lexi's health was deteriorating due to old age,
Lydia brought Lexi inside for a photo shoot next to the Christmas tree.
Unfortunately, Lexi didn't make it to Christmas,
but we love the photo memories.
Lexi looked so cute sleeping with her head under her wing.
Lexi experienced symptoms of arthritis, kidney failure
and gout due to her old age ~6+ years old.
We were very sad to see Lexi go, but we didn't want
the pain and suffering to continue.
May you be a happy hen forever.

Hanging Out In Winter

It's been a long time since blog posts.....
Here's photos of the 4 hens hanging out in winter.
From left to right: Speckles, Coco, Frenchy and
Lexi hang out near their favourite bush.
Frenchy is fluffed up trying to keep warn whilst Lexi is hunched over.
Lexi (on the right) looks sleepy.
Speckles comes out of the bush to see if Lydia has any snacks.

Corny Chickens

Lydia went away for Easter so there were no Easter photos of the Happy Hens.
Instead, you can be entertained by these 'corny chicken' photos.
From left to right, Coco (moulting, with no tail) pecks a fresh
corn cob with Lexi, whilst Frenchy looks the other way.
Lexi and Frenchy enjoy eating the corn cob.
Coco walks towards the two feeding hens whilst Speckles
feeds her face in a bowl of pallets in the background.
Speckles is not a huge fan of fresh corn on the cob.
Lexi takes a break from her corny breakfast.
Coco takes a break.
Frenchy is looking old with corn crumbs on her beak.
She's over 7 years old now.

Speckles and Frenchy Turn 7

Speckles (far left) and Frenchy (middle) turned 7 years old last month.
We've never had pet hens live so long before! They are 'grandmas'!
Lexi the white leghorn is about 5 years old.
Speckles is an inquisitive hen. We love her fluffy face and beard.
Frenchy is moulting and she has lost half her tail feathers.
The 4 happy hens sit under a tree in the corner.
They are all beginning to moult.
Coco (the grey hen) is about 5 years old, about the same age as Lexi.
Speckles, Frenchy, Coco and Lexi eat laying pallets from a bowl.

Dirt Bath Dirty

Coco feels the summer heat in Western Australia

and she loves to have dirt baths to cool down.

Coco likes to walk around dirty without shaking the dirt off.
Coco takes hours to preen herself after a dirt bath.
Our little grey hen has turned brown!
