Super Soggy Bed Time

It has been a very rainy Sunday due to Tropical Cyclone Lua
crossing inland Western Australia.
When the rain got heavy in the afternoon, the 2 Happy Hens
sheltered under the 4-wheel-drive parked in the car port.
The girls were not very impressed with their lack of
grass grazing time today due to the wet weather.

The 2 Happy Hens had very wet feathers when it was
dark enough for them to retreat to their coop for the night.

 Super soggy bed time.
Lucky chicken feathers are waterproof!

Curry is on the left hand side of the photo and Giblet is on the right.
Giblet always gets wetter than Curry does when it rains.
Giblet loves water and loves running around in the rain.
The 2 Happy Hens have lots of preening to do in the morning.

Happy Hatch Day!

Happy Hatch Day to the 2 Happy Hens!
Wow - that is a bit of a tongue twister!

Curry and Giblet turn 2 years old today.
They are officially turning into "old chooks"!

Curry loves to eat broken snail shell off the rock.
The 2 Happy Hens are mad about snails, dead or alive, they love snails.
You can see new golden feathers on Curry's back.
I often say as a joke that Curry is turning a "curry colour"!

Curry jumps off the rock after her snail shell snack.

Giblet in action leaping off the stack of bricks.
The 2 Happy Hens love to go bug hunting when we remove the bricks.
They often find spiders, slaters, small lizards and other yummy bug
treats hiding under the bricks.

We Love Our Pets

Happy Valentine's Day to all our beloved pets!

The 2 Happy Hens were entered into the "2011 Pet Of The Year"
competition held by a local newspaper late last year.
Curry and Giblet were the only two chickens entered in the pet competition
(along with many "normal pets" like dogs of course!)
Many people saw their photo in the newspaper and had a laugh.
Unfortunately neither hen won the free competition
but you've got to be in it to win it!
Next year Lydia will have to organise a bigger and better
campaign for people to vote for Curry and Giblet to win!

Footprints

Who was here?
Have the 2 Happy Hens spontaneously combusted?
Or is this stencil art?!

Close-up evidence that the 2 Happy Hens had a dust bath
and shook off the excess dirt on the verandah!

Vine time

 Where's the Happy Hen?
This photo reminds me of the "Where's Wally?" children's cartoon book.
Can you find Curry in the vine?

Close up photo of Curry under the vine hunting for bugs.

Where's Curry now?
Is that some tail feathers or some orange flowers I see amongst the greenery?

Giblet pops up from underneath the vine.
Curry is still head-down bug hunting.

Oh there's Curry!

Aerial view of the 2 Happy Hens in the middle
of the vine where there is a patch of dirt.

Great camoflague.
The 2 Happy Hens love to climb all over this ground-covering vine.
We often refer to the plant as the "chicken obstacle course"!

Looking Outside the Kitchen Window

This is the view from our kitchen window on a Sunday morning.
Curry was looking like a "Curry puff" sitting on the ground
(on the right hand side) whilst Giblet was being the preen queen as usual!

Giblet is fluffed up (on the left hand side) whilst
Curry is beginning to doze off.....

Giblet turned her flexible neck 180 degrees to preen her back whilst
Curry sleeps with her head resting under her left wing....... so cute.

Giblet is the preen queen whilst Curry is sleeping beauty.

Curry puff is settling in to have a sleep before lunch time.

Curry is a "left wing" chicken and slept for over half an hour on the ground!
Gee it's a hard life being a hen!

Egg Time

A view through the mobile coop from back to front.
The rear door is down so you can see right through the hen house.
Giblet has laid an egg in the nesting box on the right.

Close up photo of Giblet's fresh egg. She has made a little nest in the straw.
Both Curry and Giblet are good at making nests.
Curry loves sitting on eggs and sleeping in the coop.

Lydia has been dying to buy an egg storage house like this one for ages but hasn't seen any for sale in the local shops. This cute egg house was a lucky find in a second hand store and was on display in the shop's front window. It must have been waiting for me to walk buy, see it, buy it and decorate my kitchen with eggs from the 2 Happy Hens!

The pair of chickens on the oval black stand are salt and pepper shakers.
They were part of a farewell gift from Lydia's previous employer, along with a
bamboo chopping board in the shape of a chicken! (not pictured)
