2016 Pet of the Year Competition

The 2 Happy Hens were the only 2 bird entries in the 'Pet of the Year'
competition coordinated by the local newspaper and council
as part of 'Pets Day Out' annual community event.
Only 16 pets were entered in the competition this year
(not all pet entries are pictured here).
Chickadee was being broody for the sixth time during
the competition which failed to impress Nestle!
Unfortunately the 2 Happy Hens didn't win the
competition but it was a good fun anyway!

The 2 Happy Hens were selected to feature in a
special blog post for pets with internet profiles.
Nestle's photo was chosen and 'made cool' to advertise the blog feature.

You can see Nestle and Chickadee's claim to fame
by clicking on tabs '3' and '5' in the link below.

Broody at 2

Chickadee was broody when she turned 2 years old mid October 2016.
Chickadee had the urge to sit after she was locked out of the
nesting box in the coop. Lydia and Gerard don't want the
hassle of Chickadee sitting on fertile eggs to breed.
This is the sixth time Chickadee has gone broody in 2 years!
BFC = Broody Fluffy Chickadee!

Nestle keeps Chickadee company.
The 2 Happy Hens are sleepy in the afternoon.
Nap time.
The 2 Happy Hens have gone off the lay since Chickadee went broody.
Nestle is 4 years and 4 months old and is at the end of her egg laying days.
Depending on the sky conditions, sunlight and cloud coverage,
Rhode Island Red hen Chickadee can look more red than brown.

Sunny Spring Days

Spring has finally sprung in Western Australia and we
are beginning to see more sunshine after a long winter.
Nestle loves to run in the sun in the backyard.
Nestle wants a feed and jumps on top of the outdoor setting
to get closer to the food scraps Lydia is carrying.
Nestle likes to perch up high, especially as she is the dominant hen.
The 2 Happy Hens eat melon scraps on a sunny morning.
 Chickadee likes eating juicy melon.
Nestle takes a break from eating melon for breakfast.
Chickadee stops for a drink.
Double snuggles! The 2 Happy Hens have their faces in the sun.
Chickadee decides to take a nap whilst Gerard is cuddling her.

Selfies With Nestle

Nestle likes to fly up onto Lydia's shoulder, especially in
the mornings when Lydia is getting ready to go to work.
Nestle likes to be up high.

Do you think I should wear my new hat to work today?
Nestle likes to be the centre of attention as the top-of-the-pecking-order hen.
Look at Nestle's fat belly!
Girls just want to have fun!
Do you like Lydia's new ear warmer?!
You looking at me?
What's over there Nestle?
A happy morning.
Nestle turns her next 180 degrees and looks behind.
It's amazing how flexible a chicken's neck is!
Strike a pose.
Happy days.
Nestle makes herself comfortable sitting on Lydia's upper back.
Lydia looks uncomfortable slouched over whilst Nestle gets sleepy.
A sunny morning for sitting on Lydia's shoulder.
Nestle looks down.
Nestle has a good view whilst standing on Lydia's shoulder.

Nestle watches the world go by....
Nestle preens Lydia's hair.
Say cheese!

Nestle balances on Lydia's head.
This is Lydia's excuse for having a bad hair day!

Silly Signs

Inspired by some funny photos of dogs on Facebook
with "shame signs" around their neck, Lydia decided to
do a similar photo shoot with the 2 Happy Hens.
Chickadee confesses that she's been broody
4 times compared to her sister Ruby.
Nestle runs around stressed with a sign saying
"I eat like a pig".
Nestle stands on the perch in the coop as Chickadee looks on from the nest.
Chickadee wants to know if you would like to pre-order some eggs?
Looks like she's preparing to lay a fresh egg!

The funny photoshoot was abandoned early as the
2 Happy Hens were not very happy!

Nestle Turns 4

This month, Nestle turns 4 years old.
Happy Hatch Day Nestle!
We are excited as she is our oldest living chicken to date.
4 year old Nestle still lays 3-4 eggs a week.
Her huge ivory coloured eggs weigh over 70 grams each!
Nestle is a healthy hen for her age.
Nestle likes to have cuddles with Gerard.
Here she is fast asleep being patted.
Nestle starts to wake up. Her eye opens a tiny bit.
Nestle wakes up.
 Nestle looks sleepy.
Nestle has a characteristic big red comb and is the dominant hen.
Nestle may be the oldest and smallest of the 2 Happy Hens,
but she is still the boss and the biggest sook!
Chickadee is a huge Rhode Island Red hen compared to hybrid Nestle!
Chickadee is nearly half Nestle's age.
